To The Core

To The Core
Temptation calls
Hunger aches for
Crisp and cool
Beneath shiny, red facade
The promise of sweetness lurks beneath paper thin skin
Seek the center
Seek the seeds
Find disappointment
Black, solid teardrops
Embedded in the middle
Of an apple
That has betrayed you, your hopes, your expectations
The apple of your eye is
Rotten to the core
I guess this is another version of the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Except it is the opposite: beautiful outside, ugly inside.
Additionally, it was inspired by the idea of the Forbidden Fruit (the apple from the Tree of Knowledge) in Christianity: a fruit that caused the downfall of man, a fruit full of promise, a fruit that led astray.
