Deadly Rebirth

Deadly Rebirth
Held hostage in one’s own home
To husband and children
Her wedding ring a golden shackle
Lonely Midwestern woman drowning in Creolean life
Enamored with an idealized image
The perfect one to love (if only that was true)
Independence and freedom: so close, too far
Struggling to be free of expectations
But society’s cage is too strong
Shedding responsibilities, clothes
And running into the ocean
Oh, born again
Swimming away and away
Surrendering finally to the far and deep
This was inspired by The Awakening by Kate Chopin, which I read in English class this year. Although I personally did not enjoy it (I thought the protagonist was too immature and never developed, which I guess maybe was the point), I will admit that the book was thought-provoking.
